Abstract

A method of decolorizing wet process phosphoric acid containing organic color-imparting impurities is provided. The process includes treating the acid with a strong oxidant at a temperature in the range of about 50.degree. to about 150.degree. C. by slowly adding the oxidant to the acid over a period of time of at least about 3 hours. The oxidized acid then is contacted with a regenerable activated carbon, preferably in a packed column, in order to adsorb the oxidized color-imparting impurities.
