Abstract
By the vapor phase reaction of benzene or a monoalkylbenzene with an alkylating agent in the presence of a specific catalyst obtained by subjecting a zeolite to a treatment with a gas containing a silicic acid ester and then a calcination in an oxygen-containing gas, said zeolite being 10 or more with respect to its molar ratio of SiO.sub.2 /X.sub.2 O.sub.3 in which X is at best one member selected from the group consisting of Al, B and Cr and having a constraint index within the range of 1 to 15, various useful 1,4-dialkylbenzenes can be produced not only in high yield but also in high selectivity.
