Abstract

This invention provides a process for the conversion of an alicyclic .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated ketone compound to an acyclic oxocarboxylic acid product which contains at least one less carbon atom per molecule than the ketone starting material. The conversion involves ozonation of the alicyclic .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated ketone in an aqueous alcohol reaction medium, followed by a heating step.
