Abstract
A process for removing chlorate ions from an impure alkali metal chloride brine removed from an electrolytic cell comprises acidifying the impure brine to a pH of less than about 2. The acidified brine is then reacted with a reducing portion of hydrazine hydrochloride. The novel process rapidly reduces the chlorate ions in the absence of the formation of chlorine and chlorine dioxide gases and with the production of nitrogen gas as a product.
