Abstract

Sulfonated tributylphenol ethoxylates of the formula ##STR1## where x denotes a number from 2 to 20, and M denotes a cation, their use as surfactants, in particular as auxiliaries in the tertiary production of crude oil, and an improved, general process for preparing sulfonated alkyl and (alkyl)aryl polyalkoxylates by reacting halides of alkyl and (alkyl)aryl polyethoxylates with alkali metal sulfite by carrying out the reaction in the presence of lower alcohols, polyols, monoethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or alkyl ethers thereof, as solubilizing agents.
