Abstract

A process is provided for making benzimidazoles having the formula ##STR1## wherein Y is oxygen, sulfur or --NH; R.sup.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 aralkyl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 alkaryl; R.sup.2 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy or halogen; and n is 1 or 2; comprising reacting a compound having the formula ZYCN, wherein Z is an alkali metal or ammonium moiety and Y has the meanings above; with a compound having the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and n have the meanings above, in the presence of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 alkanol and, except when Z is NH.sub.4, in the presence of an acid.
