Novel 4-methyl-3-formyl-pentanoic acid derivative of the formula ##STR1## wherein Hal is a halogen, R.sub.1 is alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and A and B are .dbd.O or A is halogen and B is --OR.sub.2 and R.sub.2 is alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, their preparation and their use as intermediates.
