Abstract
The inclusion of salts of rubidium or cesium or mixtures thereof in a catalyst comprised of copper and zinc oxides and optionally manganese oxide or manganese and cobalt oxides and a stabilizer such as chromic, ceric, magnesium or aluminum oxides results in higher yields of C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkanols and lower production of hydrocarbons in the effluent from the catalytic reaction environment. The reactant gases passing over the catalyst comprises hydrogen and carbon monoxide and optionally carbon dioxide if economically advantageous.
