Abstract

In a liquid crystal mixture comprising a nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy, an optically active substance such as cholesteric or chiral nematic liquid crystal, a dichroic dye and an ionic substance, the present invention is characterized by use of 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid having the following structural formula as the ionic substance: ##STR1##
