Abstract

Sodium silicate solutions are prepared by dissolving sand in sodium hydroxide solution at a pressure of at least 100 psig and at a temperature of at least 130.degree. C. to produce a sodium silicate solution having a silica to sodium oxide molar ratio of between 2.4:1 and 2.8:1, and activating said sodium silicate solution by reaction with from about 50 to 200 ppm of alumina.
