Abstract
A surface modifier for a powdery or granular substance having a hydrophilic surface is provided. The surface modifier comprises an aluminum chelate compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is selected from hydrogen and C1-6 alkyl, R.sup.2 is selected from methyl and phenyl, R.sup.3 is selected from R.sup.4 --, R.sup.5 O-- and R.sup.6 NH--, A is selected from R.sup.7 O--, R.sup.8 COO--, R.sup.9 SO.sub.3 --, R.sup.10 OSO.sub.3 --, ##STR2## R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.11, R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 are C1-22 alkyl or C3-22 alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkylarly, R.sup.3 may be the same as or different from R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.11, R.sup.12 and R.sup.13, with the proviso that at least one of R.sup.3, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.11, R.sup.12, and R.sup.13 is a substituent having at least 8 carbon atoms of a polymerizable alkenyl group, and m=0.5 to 2.7, n=0.3 to 2.5 and m+n=0.8 to 3.
