Abstract

But-2-ene-1,4-diones substituted in the 1,4-positions, of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 17 carbon atoms, are prepared by a process in which a 2,5-disubstituted furan of the formula ##STR2## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have the above meaning, is oxidized with a percarboxylic acid in the presence of a carboxylic acid.
