o-Benzylphenol is prepared by reacting phenol with dibenzyl ether in the presence of .gamma.-aluminum oxide as a condensation agent. o-Benzylphenol is used, inter alia, as such or, after chlorination, in the form of chlorobenzylphenols, as a microbicidal agent.
