Abstract

A method for preparing a benzoquinone represented by the general formula: ##STR1## where each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group, which comprises reacting a phenol represented by the general formula: ##STR2## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as defined above, with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst.
