Abstract

New benzonitriles of formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each alkyl groups of 1-8 C atoms, and one of these radicals can also be alkoxy of 1-8 C atoms, and Q is one or two radicals selected from 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene and/or 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2] octylene, are very useful for preparing liquid crystallene dielectrics and electrooptical display elements based thereon.
