Abstract

A copolymer represented by the general formula: ##STR1## [wherein, A denotes an alkylene group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, the --A--O--.sub.a chain may have at least one oxy-alkylene unit bonded in any possible order, a denotes an integer of the value of 1 to 100, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently denote a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, X and Y independently denote a monovalent metal atom, a divalent metal atom, an ammonium group, an organic amine group, or --B--O--.sub.b R.sup.3 (wherein, B denotes an alkylene group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms. the --B--O--.sub.b chain may have at least one oxy-alkylene unit bonded in any possible order, b denotes 0 or an integer of the value of 1 to 100, and R.sup.3 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms), Z denotes a structural unit derived from a copolymerizable vinyl monomer, m and n each denote 1 where X and Y are each a monovalent metal atom, an ammonium group, an organic amine group, or --B--O--.sub.b R.sup.3 or 2 where X and Y are each a divalent metal atom, and p, q, and r denote numbers such that 25.ltoreq.p.ltoreq.75, 25.ltoreq.q.ltoreq.75, and 0.ltoreq.r.ltoreq.50 are satisfied on condition that p+q+r equals 100, and it is provided that the structural units involved herein may be bonded in any possible order].
