Abstract
The invention relates to surface-active azo compounds obtainable by reacting azo compounds corresponding to the following general formula (I): ##STR1## in which X and Y are the same or different and represent ##STR2## and R represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, with at least one C.sub.10 -C.sub.18 -paraffin disulphonic acid dihalide in aqueous medium or a solvent or solvent mixture which is inert to the reactants under the process conditions and in which the reactants are at least partly soluble, at temperatures in the range of from 0.degree. to +.degree. C. and in the presence of a base in a quantity substantially equivalent to the hydrolysable halogen, the reaction being accompanied by the elimination of hydrogen halide. The new azo compounds give low electrolyte, low-foam dispersions in emulsion and dispersion polymersation.
