Abstract

In the event of a malfunction of the unit, the damper plate may be moved to and locked in the open position, to permit the furnace to operate. With the plate locked, the motor would normally run continuously, even when the furnace was not operating. This is because the closed position of the plate, necessary to turn off the motor, cannot be reached. A slip clutch, located between the motor shaft and the plate, has parts which slip relative to each other when the motor is running but the plate is locked. The contours and biasing of the parts causes one part to move a limited distance, in a direction opposite to normal. The motor is stopped in response to this oppositely directed movement. A bent portion of the plate positioning shaft is freely received in a recess elongated in and laterally spaced from the motor shaft for self-alignment and to permit the oppositely directed movement necessary to stop the motor.
