Abstract

A process for preparing 4-methyl-1-pentene comprising dimerizing propylene in the presence of a catalyst, characterized in that the catalyst is composed of sodium and/or sodium amide supported on a carrier represented by the following formula K.sub.2 O.xAl.sub.2 O.sub.3 wherein x has a value in the range of 0.5.ltoreq..times..ltoreq.11. In one embodiment, the catalyst is hydrogenated prior to the use thereof.
