Abstract

A process for producing p-nitroaniline, which comprises nitrating an .alpha.-methylbenzalaniline of the formula ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1, with nitric acid in the presence of a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent and sulfuric acid to form a p-nitro-.alpha.-methylbenzalaniline of the formula ##STR2## wherein R and n are as defined above, and hydrolyzing the p-nitro-.alpha.-methylbenzalaniline.
