Abstract
Glass fiber reinforced plastic laminates including randomly oriented glass fibers, embedded within unsaturated polyester resins, are provided over at least one surface thereof with a gel coat, essentially free of the glass fibers. The gel coat is formed from resins which are polymerizable in the presence of ultraviolet radiation. The gel coat is at least partially cured on a transparent carrier film by exposing gel coat resins to ultraviolet radiation. Thereafter randomly oriented glass fibers and unsaturated polyester resin syrup are applied onto the gel coat to form the resulting laminate. The gel coat is selected to provide superior weathering characteristics and resistance to deterioration from ultraviolet radiation exposure, e.g., sunlight, when compared to the corresponding properties of the unsaturated polyester resin in which the randomly oriented glass fibers are embedded.
