Abstract

Esterification products of monoalcohols and dicarboxylic acids, or of polyhydric alcohols and monocarboxylic acids respectively, containing 5 to 45% by weight of units of hydroxycarboxylic acids and having a ratio of carbon to oxygen atoms greater than 4.1 obtained from (a) aliphatic C.sub.1 -C.sub.14 alcohols, (b) aliphatic C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 carboxylic acids and optionally cycloaliphatic C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 and aromatic C.sub.7 -C.sub.12 carboxylic acids, and (c) lactones of aliphatic C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 hydroxycarboxylic acids. They are suitable for the preparation of lubricants and lubricant compositions.
