Abstract

A dense sintered silicon carbide ceramic has high strength and a flexural strength of at least 25 kg/mm.sup.2 at room temperature and 1400.degree. C. which is obtained by molding a mixture of an aluminum oxide source at a ratio of 0.5 to 35 wt. % as Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and silicon carbide at a substantial residual portion followed by a pressureless sintering.
