Abstract

The invention relates to phosphonoformaldehyde of the formula ##STR1## Also included in the invention is a method for the manufacture of said phosphonoformaldehyde in which a dialkoxymethane phosphonic acid is warmed with water (then reacted with a base if a salt is desired). Phosphonoformaldehyde is an intermediate for the manufactureof phosphonohydroxy acetic acid, which is an antiviral agent.
