Abstract

A method of manufacturing a porous diaphragm of an organic polymeric mateial, e.g. of polytetrafluoroethylene, suitable for use as a diaphragm in an electrolytic cell, the method comprising forming a sheet of organic polymeric material containing particulate dextrin, for example by heating a starch-containing sheet, optionally in the presence of acid, to convert the starch in the sheet to dextrin, and extracting the dextrin from the sheet, for example by contacting the sheet with caustic alkali and/or with alkali metal hypochlorite.
