A process for the preparation of 2-methyl-pentane-2,4-diol by hydrogenating diacetone-alcohol at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst which has been obtained by calcining the compound of the formula Ni.sub.6 Al.sub.2 (OH).sub.16 CO.sub.3 . 4H.sub.2 O.
