Abstract

Phosphonate compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and y is an integer from 0 to 2, are useful as flame retardants for thermoplastic polymers, especially linear thermoplastic polyesters.
