Abstract

The invention relates to polymeric coating compositions which are at least partially soluble in water. Polyesterimides, polyesteramideimides, polyesterimidehydantoins and polyesterimide urethanes are prepared which have enhanced solubility in water. The reactants which form the various polymers are reacted to essentially a zero acid number with essentially no free carboxyl groups or those which are not part of the formed imide moiety or linkages. At least some of the imide rings are then cleaved or split with amine material to enhance solubility in water. The compositions are particularly useful as electrical insulating coatings or wire enamels and can also be used in preparing laminates and composites and for general coating purposes.
