Abstract

A method for stabilizing an organic substrate to light the substrate having an absorption maximum in the range of about 300 nm-about 800 nm, which comprises making at least one complex represented by following general formula (I) coexist with the substrate: ##STR1## wherein M represents an atom selected from the group consisting of Cu, Co, Ni, Pd and Pt, X represents O or S, R.sub.1 represents an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group or, when taken together, the R.sub.1 's bound to the same phosphorus atom represent the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete a 6-membered ring together with the phosphorus atom. A photographic element containing the above complex is also claimed.
