Abstract

A catalyst system is made up of a catalyst and a cocatalyst. The catalyst component is made by intensely mixing a titanium trihalide component with triaryl phosphite and aluminum trihalide adjuvants. The cocatalyst is an organoaluminum compound. An example of such a system is a ball milled mixture of TiCl.sub.3..sup.1/ 3AlCl.sub.3, triphenyl phosphite, and aluminum trichloride as the catalyst and diethylaluminum chloride as the cocatalyst. Such catalyst systems give both high productivity and low solubles in the polymerization of propylene. The catalytic activity and/or stereospecificity of the catalyst can be enhanced by heat treatment at a moderate temperature subsequent to milling the mixture.
