Pharmaceutical compositions comprising essentially pure trans-9-[3-(4-hydroxyethyl-1-piperazinyl)propylidene]-2-trifluoromethylthi axanthene or pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof and a pharmaceutical carrier and methods for treating depression which comprises administering said pharmaceutical compositions.
