Abstract

Osmium (III) or (IV) in an anionic complex with oxygen and having an alkali metal, ammonium or tetra(lower)alkylammonium cation is oxidized to a valency state higher than 5 by reaction with an organic hydroperoxide, such as ethylbenzene hydroperoxide, at a temperature less than 30.degree. C.
