Abstract

A process for preparing rutile TiO.sub.2 by a process comprising oxidizing with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas, a mixture TiCl.sub.4 and AlCl.sub.3 and after at least 80% of the TiCl.sub.4 has been converted to TiO.sub.2 adding sufficient PCl.sub.3 to form from 0.1-0.5% P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in the TiO.sub.2, the amount of AlCl.sub.3 being sufficient to form 0.1-1.5% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 in the TiO.sub.2.
