Abstract

The maleic acid adduct of anthracene is used as a starting material for 11-amino-12-carboalkoxy-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene, which through reaction with nitrous acid in a protic solvent provides an 11-substituted-12-carboalkoxy-10,11-dihydro-5,10-methano-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cy cloheptene which is then converted into the useful intermediate 12-carboxy-10,11-dihydro-5,10-methano-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene.
