Abstract
An intumescent composition comprising a hydroxyalkyl amino alkyl phosphonic acid, a cyclic nitrogen compound, and water, wherein said phosphonic acid is selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## wherein x, y, and n are integers independently selected from the group consisting of 1 and 2, q is an integer selected from the group consisting of 1, 2, and 3, z is an integer selected from the group consisting of 0 and 1, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl radicals containing from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, and haloalkyl radicals containing from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, and R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals containing from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms and haloalkyl radicals containing from about 3 to about 6 carbon atoms, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in the R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 groups does not exceed about 14; and wherein said cyclic nitrogen compound is ##STR2## wherein a, b, and c are integers selected from the group consisting of 1 and 2, a plus b plus c equal about 3 to 6, and X, X', and X' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and --CH.sub.3.
