Abstract
Quaternary phosphonium hydroxides of the general formula: ##STR1## in which R stands either for hydrogen or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n stands for 1 or 2, are made by reacting a di- or trimethylphosphine in an aqueous medium with an epoxide of the general formula ##STR2## in which R has the meaning given above. More specifically a pH-value of .gtoreq.12 is established in the aqueous medium by means of a base and the starting materials are mixed in said medium.
