Abstract
Polyarylene sulfide resins essentially free of disulfide linkages are obtained by reacting S.sub.2 Cl.sub.2 or S.sub.2 Br.sub.2 with a benzenoid aromatic compound having 0-2 substituents per benzene ring at about 90.degree. C.-350.degree. C. in the presence of a metal halide Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The process is conveniently carried out at 90.degree. C.-150.degree. C. in inert solvent solution from which the polymer precipitates as it is formed.
