Abstract

Disclosed is a method of preparing a hydrous zirconium oxide diaphragm by treating a porous matrix with ZrOCl.sub.2 and hydrolyzing the ZrOCl.sub.2 to ZrO.sub.2 with NH.sub.3. The disclosed method contemplates leaching out the NH.sub.4 Cl, dehydrating the substrate, and sequentially building up the ZrO.sub.2.
