Abstract

A phosphorous halide (for example, PCl.sub.3) is present during the Friedel-Crafts polymerization of an alpha-monoalkene, resulting in the in situ formation of a phosphorylated polymer. Further reaction of the polymer with a polyamine converts phosphoryl groups to phosphonamide groups, yielding a product which is useful as a lube oil detergent.
