Abstract

This invention relates to the polymerization of .alpha.-olefins and to catalysts and cocatalysts for that purpose wherein the polymerization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa, and IVa of the Periodic Table and a solid cocatalyst comprising the reaction product of a halogenating agent, an organic oxygenated compound of a divalent metal, and a derivative of a transition metal of Groups IVb, Vb, and VIb of the Periodic Table, the proportions of halogenating agent and organic oxygenated compound being that required to result in a reaction product thereof having an atomic ratio of halogen/divalent metal greater than 1. The invention also comprises the method of making the cocatalysts.
