Abstract

A process and apparatus for the continuous production of heat-set, crimped, thermoplastic filaments by passing a tow of filaments through a stuffer box crimper and then a heat setting device attached to the exit of the crimper. The tow in the crimping chamber is cooled to a temperature not exceeding 100.degree. C in order to separate the heat setting and crimping processes, whereby the crimp ratio may be varied by adjusting the temperature of the tow in the crimping chamber.
