Abstract
Reaction of 1-hydroxy-2-ketones of the general formula R-- CO-- CH.sub.2 OH, where R is a short alkyl, with ammonia gives a new compound ##STR1## which on hydrogenation gives 2-amino-1-alcohols; the yield can be improved by carrying out the hydrogenation in the presence of ammonia.
