Abstract

The title compounds correspond to formulas O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2.2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. and )--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar.. They are prepared by (A) reacting by contacting HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym. HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. with .sup..sym. NH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O--SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid at a temperature greater than about 140.degree. C, thereby forming a reaction product comprising O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2. 2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. ; and (B) reacting by contacting the reaction product of step (A) or O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 . 2HSO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. with a methanol solution of HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2, thereby forming O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.3.sup..sym.).sub.2 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. as a solid precipitate. The latter compound is extremely useful as a chemical intermediate in forming bis(2-aminoethyl) ether.
