Abstract

Organotin trihalides are prepared by reacting in a polar solvent a stannous halide, hydrogen halide and an olefin of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are an alkyl group, an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon group or a hydrogen atom and at least one of the groups contains a carbonyl group adjacent to the carbon-carbon double bond. The resulting product may be converted into organotin stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride and other polymers.
