Abstract

Non-irritant amphoteric surfactants having the formula: ##STR1## having preservative properties and compatible with anionic surfactants, where R is an alkyl group of from 8 to 14 carbon atoms, and where M' M', M'' and M.sup.IV may be the same or different and represent a monovalent moiety selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium ion, or ammonium ion which is substituted by from 1 to 3 lower alkyl groups, said alkyl groups being optionally substituted by one hydroxyl group.
