Abstract

Acetals can be transformed into useful products by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen. For example, methylal can be converted to ethanol and .beta.-methoxyethanol. The reaction can be conducted in the presence of a catalyst system comprising cobalt, iodine and ruthenium.
