Abstract
Anticaries ingredients for corn and cane sugar containing confectionaries such as syrups, mints, and candies, and for oral health products such as mouthwashes, lozenges, toothpastes and toothpowders are presented. The anticaries ingredients include aliphatic mono and dialdehydes having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, aliphatic monoaldehydes having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, and polyaldehydes such as dialdehyde starch and dialdehyde galactomannan gum. These ingredients in concentrations of about 5 percent by weight or less have been found to effectively inhibit the growth and acid production of oral microorganisms and thereby reduce the incidence of dental caries.
