Abstract

Certain novel .alpha.-alkyl-phosphonosuccinic acid compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R is lower alkyl, or alkenyl or alkynyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl are particularly suitable as sequestering agents, e.g., for incorporation into cleansing compositions.
