1-SUBSTITUTED 2-METHYL-TETRAHYDROPYRIMIDINES ARE PREPARED BY REACTING AN N-substituted propylene diamine with an acetoacetic acid ester or amine at a temperature of from 0.degree. to 80.degree. C and removing the water produced in the reaction at a temperature of from 0.degree. to 80.degree. C.
