Compounds of formula I ##SPC1## wherein R denotes hydrogen or an aliphatic or aromatic radical. These compounds are prepared by irradiation of succinylsuccinic acid or diesters thereof, in the crystalline state, with UV light rays or with .gamma.-radiation.
